Au Pair in America is one of the first international exchange programmes in the USA. Live with a family, care for their children, attend a local college and get to know American life.

The au pair lives with a carefully selected family, cares for their children and attends a local college to study a subject of their choice. The stay lasts up to 12 months and can be extended.

Only within the Au Pair in America programme can you use an education grant to study at, for example, the University of California.

Requirements

  • Age 18–26 (inclusive)
  • Driving licence and driving experience
  • You enjoy working with children
  • Practical childcare experience in the last 3 years, at least 200 hours (does not have to be formal)
  • Secondary education
  • Conversational English
  • A clean criminal record
  • No children of your own, not married
  • Ready to spend 12 months in the USA

What the programme provides

  • A working week of up to 45 hours
  • A weekly stipend per the current Au Pair in America programme terms
  • The family covers living costs and meals in addition to pocket money
  • Study commitment per the US au pair programme requirements (study credits or contact hours)
  • An education grant per the current programme terms
  • The family covers standard insurance cover
  • Return flights

Costs

  • The programme fee depends on the chosen programme and is paid in stages
  • Additional insurance (optional) up to €495
  • Visa application fee to the US embassy (ask us for the current amount, as the official fee changes from time to time)
  • Extra costs: medical certificate and international permits/documents
  • The first instalment is due once a family is found; the rest is paid in stages through to the visa.

    References, a medical certificate, a criminal record extract and proof of childcare experience.

    Interview and family matching

    After the interview you are matched with a family. The programme fee is paid in stages.
